Optional Extra Credit Assignment

Checklist for Drawings...

As mentioned in class, we highly recommend creating a personal checklist that you can use when completing a drawing or assignment. Below are several points and areas where improvement is needed that you can use for your individual checklist.

• line quality consistent throughout drawing
• used appropriate line weights
• provided a border or respected a border
• labeled the drawings with architectural lettering with appropriate spacing
• architectural lettering used with lightly drawn guidelines
• used eraser shield for hidden lines and darkened dashes when needed
• followed instructions
• provided appropriate paper size
• formated paper appropriately

In order to accomplish the areas of improvements listed above, you may want to begin an assignment with a rough draft that is drawn to scale and then trace that drawing onto a clean sheet of trash or vellum for your final. This practice will allow you to correct any mistakes, avoid any excess erase marks and awkward spacing often occuring when drafting a drawing for the first time.

A Leaf a Day...

In your observation visual journal (the green one) you are to take a few minutes everyday to observe a leaf and sketch what you see. Notice the texture of the leaf you have selected and think about how to capture its texture with a pencil. Consider adjusting the pencil pressure to produce a variety of tones. Do not hesitate to experiment with contrast and shading to capture the light and shadow created by the shape and curl of your leaf.

Preliminary Instructions for Blogging

Creating a blog…

- Go to http://www.blogger.com/

- Select CREATE A BLOG

- Create a Google account using preferred email address

- Name your blog and blog address: this will be your blog address throughout your time at UNCG, we recommend something easy to remember

- Choose template

- Create

Adding a Gadget…

- Go to DESIGN (top left)

- Select “Add a gadget” in the right hand column

- Scroll down and select LABELS from list

- Save

Creating a Post…

- Go to POSTING in blog menu screen or NEW POST at top right

- Add a title in title box

- Type the body of the post in the given text box

- When posting for this class always include “design visualization” in the labels box

- Select PUBLISH POST

Become a follower of the class blog…

- In address bar type in: http://www.iarfall10studio101anddesign110.blogspot.com/

- Select FOLLOW from the right hand column

- Sign un using google account information

- Follow prompts until it says Congratulations

Scanning a document…

- Place document face down on scanner in computer lab

- Press scan button

- In Epson Scan select the button with the folder next to "Scan"

- Select location for the scan (either is student files or on a USB drive) and select ok

- Select Preview and once preview image is available, crop the image

- Select "Scan", image will automatically save in designated location

Replacing the header…

- Select “Design” from the menu

- Select EDIT in the title box

- Make sure you check the circle next to "shrink to fit" so the image is scaled down.

- Select the image that you have scanned in by browsing computer

- Under placement select “instead of title and description”

- Click “save”

- Always click “save” on menu

- View blog

Introducing Yourself through Drawing - Assignment One

With getting to know each other, we ask that you draw a header for your individual student blog that will double as the name tag for your desk space. Your student blog will be used as a way to show your work and document your progress for both your Studio and Design Visualization so we encourage you to make your blog a reflection of your personal design journey.

In class today you will participate in a series of exercises to establish your blog. You will learn the basics for designing the layout and publishing posts. One important element of your blog is the header, which will be the first thing that appears when a visitor is viewing your blog.

For this assignment, you will use a graphite pencil and a provided sheet of 8.5” x 2.5” paper on which you will create a custom header for your blog.

On the header, you are to provide the following elements:

• - Your full name
• - “Studio 101 and Design Visualization 110”
• - “Fall 2010”
• - A drawing of something that you observe in the studio space that you find interesting or inspiring

These elements are a starting point, feel free to be creative with this header. Before heading right to the paper create a series of thumbnail sketches to determine how you will layout the header. Practice the text along with the drawing in your shared sketchbook.

You are to place this header in the title position of your student blog before the beginning of class on August, 26^th and display the physical drawing at your studio desk.
